An Airboat Mounted Drill and Cone Penetrometer Rig
May 13, 2004

To protect the environment, the Team geotechnical firm of STE plans to utilize an airboat mounted drill and cone penetrometer (CPT) rigs to investigate the soil conditions. To provide enough reaction for the CPT soundings, which have to be jacked into the ground, oversize airboats will be used for this project. Additionally, water tanks will be installed as ballast to provide additional reaction during CPT soundings. The airboat will be able to lightly pass over the sensitive marshlands, and when needed the tanks ballasted to provide enough weight for the testing. This arrangement was specifically contrived for this project to minimize or avoid detrimental effects to wetlands. The field investigation will start in mid-June in the area south of the Leeville Bridge. The duration of the field investigation will depend on weather conditions and is estimated to be 3 months.
